Thomas Dawsey

I am proud to say I was born in Dallas, Texas. I was raised in a home with parents who loved God and His Word. They surrounded me by His Word and demonstrated His love regularly. By His grace I entered into a relationship with Christ at a young age. I spent a few short years in Indianapolis, Indiana until I could convince my parents to get back to God’s country. They took my advice and moved us back to San Antonio, Texas where I completed middle school and high school.

In my sophomore year of high school I decided to take my faith more seriously. Over the next few months I became very passionate about the church and enjoying God. It was at this point that I recognized the passion God had given me for ministry. I decided to follow this passion to Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri.

College was a very impactful time for me as this is where I met my beautiful wife Rachel. I was blessed enough to marry Rachel on June 19th of 2004. Rachel was born and raised in Wheatfield, IN (Wheatfield... sounds like a crazy place, huh?). She also graduated from Baptist Bible College in 2005. Her degree was in Music Education. We had our first child on February 24, 2011 when Avery Ayres joined the Dawsey family. We are thrilled to have her in our family. A few years later Addison Grace came along and we couldn't be happier with how God is graciously growing our family!

Here is a little bit more about me...

A Few More Things...

How do you enjoy spending your free time?

Rachel, Avery, and Addy are all pretty amazing so I love having time with them when they can fit me in. I very much enjoy reading and learning, especially when it comes to theology and Bible knowledge. I love being in awe of God so any book that I can get my hands on that helps me understand the Scriptures more clearly and leaves me more in awe of the awesome God who redeemed me is a thrill. I can be very competitive so I will get into anything where I have a chance to compete. It does not take much... basketball, putt putt, unloading groceries, etc.  I also will take any opportunity that I can to sit back and watch the Spurs or Colts.

What are a few books that helped shape the way you think?

  1. The Bible - ESV (The Gospel Transformation Study Bible)
  2. Desiring God - John Piper
  3. War of Words - Paul David Tripp
  4. Mere Christianity - C. S. Lewis
  5. God is the Gospel - John Piper
  6. The Potter's Freedom - James White

What are your favorite sports teams?

  • San Antonio Spurs
  • Indianapolis Colts
  • Longhorn Football

If you only have five minutes on the web, what websites do you visit?

  • TheGospelCoalition.org - Always some challenging thoughts on deepening my relationship with God
  • FaceBook.com - I'm watching you...
  • DesiringGod.org - My favorite Bible Teacher keeps his stuff here
  • 9to5mac.com - I love me some iPhone/Apple news

What is your favorite fast food joint?

Torchy's Tacos. I do my best to not let their tacos turn into an addiction, but I am man enough to admit I have fallen off the wagon a time or two... It was a very tasty fall.

What is your beverage of choice?

Dr. Pepper with Creme Soda in a close second.

What is your favorite passage of Scripture?

I am going to cheat and share two...

Philippians 3:7-8 - "But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss b/c of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish that I may gain Christ."

I love this passage b/c it reminds me that there is nothing in this life that is more satisfying than Jesus. The Gospel is not about getting forgiveness, salvation, or even Heaven. It is about getting Jesus! Nothing else can compare to His infinite value.

2 Corinthians 12:9  -  "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

I find a great deal of comfort from the idea that God's grace is sufficient for even the most difficult times of my life. God never leaves me in a situation where I don't have the ability to honor Him. His grace is always big enough to take on the situations I would otherwise feel crushed under. The more I rejoice in my need of God, the more I will experience His grace.

What do you like about Round Rock?

There is so much I love about living in Round Rock. I love that I can drive down major roads of the city and within seconds I pass an entrance to a neighborhood then a field with cows. I love that young families are moving in each day. I love being close enough to enjoy many of the attractions Austin has to offer, but not having to live in the  heart of the big city. I love how family oriented our community is here. I love watching a city being built up around me. It seems like every week there is so much progress being made on so many different projects. The list could go on, but let's just say I love having Round Rock as my home.

If you were to write a book, what would it be about?

This is a tough question as there are so many good books written on topics I am interested in. Here are some topics off of the top of my head that keep my mind turning and that I enjoy studying. The Sovereignty of God. Delighting in God. Understanding God as the ultimate treasure of life. God's grace. God's santifying work in suffering.

Why do you want to be a pastor?

By God's grace I have been changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I want to share the life changing grace that can only be found in the Gospel with as many people as I can. I want to spend my life sharing God's Word with others and seeing God change people so that they too can rejoice in His goodness.

I pray that my ministry is characterized by the sentaments that Paul shares...

1 Thess 2:8 - "So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us."

Where do you see yourself in twenty-five years?

In Round Rock as one of the Pastors of Southern Hills. I am excited to work with Matthew to build a life long ministry. Our goal is not to simply start a church, but rather to start a church we will finish at. When I was meeting with a realtor to buy a house they asked how long I thought we might living in the hosue for. I told them I hoped to die there. Kind of morbid, but true. I want to be here for the long haul. We love the communities in Northern Austin and are excited to spend our lives there sharing the Word and love of God.
