Our text picks up immediately after Jesus had been falsely arrested in the garden. The religious leaders were looking for a way to end Jesus’ life under the cover of the legal system. As Jesus was put on a sham of a trial Peter stood outside awaiting what would become of his Messiah. Understanding Peter’s response in the courtyard is aided by going back to John 13 to consider Jesus’ foretelling of this event, so we will start there.
