Parting Words - Introduction

If you knew your life was coming to an end and you and time to write a message to your loved ones what would your parting words be? What would you write them about? What would you encourage them with? What wisdom would you wam to leave them with? What kind of direction would you give? As John penned this letter to the churches he had been working alongside he recognized his time was running short. He was in his mid 80s and was the last living disciple of the original 12. John had a lot on his heart for the churches he had invested so much in and loved dearly. This letter is John's outpouring of love and concern for those whom God had entrusted to his spiritual care.
As we open up our study in 1 John we will take a look at the background, audience, and major themes to give us some context and structure to our study. We will also take a look at how John opens up his parting words in the first four verses of chapter 1.
